Cross-training simply aims to build the skills of everyone in the company so that they understand exactly what it takes to run the business. The idea is to empower employees to provide support from within the company instead of outsourcing or overloading one group of employees during hectic times.
Within the longevity of your career it is important that you diversify yourself and not get stuck in just one discipline. If you have the opportunity to learn other disciplines, it will only make you a better, well versed employee. It will also give you a perspective that you might not have had if you never leave your department.
Some key points of cross training:
- Great return on investment: How you add value to your company’s bottom line.
- Better collaboration: The ability to collaborate with other departments effectively and efficiently.
- Increases employee motivation: Cross training allows you to understand other positions and what your opportunities are for growth.
- Increases workforce sustainability: As companies transition, the key to sustainability is being versed in multiple areas of the business, which in turn makes you a more valuable employee.
- Improves efficiency: Each job function has high level skills, which can be passed along in cross training, forcing companies to streamline and be more efficient if a position should become vacant.
- Makes your company more agile: Provides a springboard for advancement or filling last minute vacancies.
“To really understand the business and speak about not only sales and GP, but logistics and planning, cross training was not just an option it was a necessity for my growth within the wine and beverage industry. The cross training that I had throughout my career not only added value to me as an employee, but also allowed me the opportunity to sit at the table and speak confidently about the business.” - Jennifer Reda, Vice President of Sales, Mast Jägermeister US
“From my personal experience and my base competency of sales, the opportunities I have had to work in Brand Marketing, Channel Marketing, Innovation and Operations have absolutely made me a better sales executive by allowing me to fully understand the importance of the other work functions.” - Jennifer Friedrichs, PA and DE State Market Manager, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey
