An essential part of creating a collaborative, welcoming and inclusive team is the ability to have uncomfortable, and sometimes difficult conversations with each other. While this does not always feel natural, having tough conversations at work can demonstrate to employees that their leaders have respect, time for, and investment in their teams. In this Live Chat, Miranda and Lisa will share insights and strategies on how to facilitate difficult conversations to avoid or resolve conflict.

Lisa Cain is an Associate Professor in the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University. Dr. Cain currently serves as the Immediate Past-President for the SECSA-ICHRIE and serves as an Associate Editor for both the International Journal of Consumer Studies and International Hospitality Review.

Her research interests fall within the broad topics of organizational behavior and marketing, with an emphasis on understanding internal and external customer experiences. She was recently awarded a $300,000 grant on Hospitality and the IoT, a $265,000 grant on Foodservice 2030 and beyond, and a $15,000 grant on luxury hotel customer technology preferences. She has published in the areas of work-life balance, substance abuse among hospitality workers, gender issues, technology, and loyalty in the hospitality industry, and continues to develop research in these topics.

Dr. Miranda Kitterlin-Lynch is an Associate Professor in the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University.  She received her doctoral degree in Hospitality Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  She is the Director of Networking for the SECSA Federation of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE), as well as the Associate Editor for the International Hospitality Review, and a Bloomin’ Brands DEI Alliance Research Fellow.  In 2017, Dr. Kitterlin-Lynch received the FIU Faculty Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching, and in 2021 she received the FIU Faculty Senate Award for Excellence in Advising and Mentoring.  Dr. Kitterlin-Lynch is a Coca Cola Endowed Professor, the recipient of international and domestic Best Paper awards, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and trade/industry publications.  She has also edited a textbook in her area of specialty, given a number of media interviews, and is the co-host of the Checking-Inn: A Lodging DEI Chat.
