Featuring Special Guest,
Marie-Catherine Dufour
Technical Director
Bordeaux Wine Council

Known for producing some of the world’s finest wines, Bordeaux is also a global leader in sustainable viticulture and production. Marie-Catherine Dufour, Technical Director for the Bordeaux Wine Council, discusses the region’s long-term sustainability initiatives to address climate change, one of which is to collectively reduce carbon emissions by 54% by 2030. This innovative effort includes a study on how bats, bees and trees positively influence biodiversity in the vineyards to support long-term positive environmental impact.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bordeaux is one of the global leaders in sustainable viticulture with tangible benchmarks to measure success and results
  • The progress to-date has been significant:
    • Bordeaux has reduced its carbon emissions by 24% since 2012 and plans for a 54% reduction by 2030
    • As of 2021, 75% of Bordeaux vineyards are certified sustainable as compared to 35% in 2014
    • Overall organic vineyard area increased by 43% in 2021, and today almost 20% of Bordeaux vineyards are fully certified organic
  • As a trailblazing woman in winemaking, Marie-Catherine is leading the charge on many of these biodiversity efforts — such as introducing bats and bees as natural stewards of the vineyards — and driving the technical research behind them
